For families traveling with children, that combination can be ideal. You can enjoy everything Tamarindo has to offer during the day and then come home to the quieter surroundings of Playa Langosta.

Where Is Playa Langosta?
Playa Langosta is a small beach community on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast in the province of Guanacaste. It sits immediately south of Tamarindo and borders Las Baulas National Marine Park.
The closest international airport is Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport in Liberia (LIR), making Playa Langosta relatively easy to reach for international visitors. Tamarindo also has its own small domestic airport, with convenient local flights connecting the area with San José and other destinations within Costa Rica.
Despite being so close to Tamarindo, Playa Langosta has a distinctly different feel. It is smaller, quieter and primarily residential, with vacation villas, condominiums, boutique accommodations and a handful of restaurants and businesses.
Playa Langosta vs. Tamarindo: Which Is Better for Families?
You don’t necessarily have to choose — staying in Playa Langosta gives you easy access to both.
Tamarindo is the busier of the two. It has a large selection of restaurants, shops, surf schools, beach bars, tour operators and nightlife. There is almost always something happening, and its long sandy beach is particularly popular with beginner surfers.
Playa Langosta is quieter and more residential. There are fewer businesses and less foot traffic, giving it a more relaxed feel.
For families, we think Playa Langosta offers a particularly nice balance: stay somewhere peaceful while having Tamarindo’s restaurants and activities just minutes away.
Choose Playa Langosta if you want: a quieter atmosphere, beautiful surroundings and easy access to Tamarindo without staying right in the middle of its busiest area.
Choose Tamarindo if you want: to be surrounded by restaurants, shops, nightlife and activity as soon as you walk outside.
Is Playa Langosta Good for Families?
Yes! Playa Langosta is a wonderful base for families visiting Guanacaste, particularly those who want a beach vacation without feeling isolated.
Days here can be as busy or as relaxed as you want them to be.
You might start the morning looking for monkeys in the trees, spend a few hours at the beach, cool down in the pool, head into Tamarindo for ice cream and finish the day watching the sun set over the Pacific.
There are also plenty of family activities within easy reach, including surf lessons, sailing trips, wildlife tours, horseback riding and visits to nearby beaches.
Having Tamarindo so close is especially convenient when traveling with children because supermarkets, pharmacies, restaurants and other everyday necessities are never far away.
Playa Langosta Beaches
Playa Langosta has a wilder and more natural feel than neighboring Playa Tamarindo.
The coastline includes sandy stretches, rocky areas and tide pools that are perfect for little explorers. At low tide, kids can search the rock pools for tiny crabs, fish and other marine life hiding among the rocks. The estuary is another favorite spot to explore at low tide, when calmer, shallow areas can be wonderful for swimming, splashing and discovering what the tide has left behind. Playa Langosta is also a beautiful place for family walks and watching the sunset over the Pacific.
The ocean conditions vary significantly with the tides, however, and Playa Langosta is not always suitable for young children to swim. Families should always check conditions before entering the water and supervise children closely.
For a wider sandy beach and beginner surf lessons, Playa Tamarindo is only minutes away.
One of the joys of staying in Langosta is having access to both: the quieter, more natural coastline of Playa Langosta and the long, lively beach at Tamarindo.
Restaurants in Playa Langosta
You don't have to travel far for a good meal- TheSurf Club Bar & Grill offers games for older kids, and Pizzeria El Sapo, is a great takeaway option just a short walk away.
If you're staying in a villa, there is also a small supermarket nearby where you can stock up on breakfast foods, fruit, snacks and drinks.
Nearby Tamarindo dramatically expands your choices, families can find everything from pizza, tacos and casual cafés to international cuisine, beachfront dining and restaurants for a special evening out.
One of the benefits of this area is having the flexibility to eat out when you feel like it and enjoy easy meals at home when the kids have had enough for the day.
Things to Do in Playa Langosta With Kids
There is plenty to keep families entertained around Playa Langosta and Tamarindo.
Spend a morning at the beach. Pack some snacks, explore the sand and rock pools at the beach right in front of your villa when conditions allow, and enjoy an easy morning close to home.
Look for wildlife. Howler monkeys, iguanas and tropical birds are part of everyday life in this corner of Costa Rica.
Visit the Tamarindo Children's Community Library. Feel free to borrow books to enjoy at the villa—no need to check them out, just return them to the returns box before you leave.
Swim at the Langosta Estuary. At low to mid tide enjoy the water where the river meets the ocean.
Have a pool day. Not every vacation day needs an itinerary. Some of our favorite family days involve nowhere more ambitious than the pool, the beach and somewhere good for dinner.
Take a family surf lesson. Tamarindo is one of Costa Rica's best-known beginner surfing destinations, and there are numerous surf schools offering lessons.
Explore the Tamarindo estuary. Boat and kayak tours through the mangroves offer families the chance to look for monkeys, crocodiles, birds and other wildlife.
Take a sunset sailing trip. Catamaran excursions are a popular way to spend an afternoon on the water and see the Guanacaste coastline from a different perspective.
Visit nearby beaches. Playa Conchal, Avellanas, Playa Grande and other Guanacaste beaches make excellent day trips.
Getting Around Playa Langosta
How much transportation you need depends on the kind of vacation you're planning.
Within Playa Langosta, many places can be reached on foot depending on where you're staying. However, Costa Rica is hot, and walking longer distances with small children in the middle of the day isn't always practical. Our number one recommendation is to rent a golf cart. It's the easiest and most enjoyable way to get around Langosta and Tamarindo, especially with children.
Uber, Bird scooters and local transportation make it easy to travel between Playa Langosta and Tamarindo.
Renting a car can be worthwhile if you plan to explore several beaches, national parks or other parts of Guanacaste during your stay.
For families planning mainly to relax around Playa Langosta and Tamarindo, however, having a rental car for every day of the vacation isn't necessarily essential.
How Far Is Playa Langosta From Tamarindo?
Very close!
Playa Langosta begins immediately south of Tamarindo, so the two communities essentially sit side by side.
Depending on exactly where you're going, getting between Playa Langosta and central Tamarindo usually takes only a few minutes by car. It is also possible to walk between Langosta and Tamarindo, although families with young children may prefer a quick golf cart/Uber ride, particularly during the hottest part of the day. The walk from your villa to central Tamarindo can take about 15-20 minutes.
This proximity is one of the biggest reasons we love Playa Langosta for families: Tamarindo is there whenever you want it, but you don't necessarily have to stay amongst all the activity.
Where to Stay in Playa Langosta
Playa Langosta has a mix of vacation rentals, condominiums, villas and smaller hotels.
For families, a private villa or apartment can make traveling significantly easier.
Having separate bedrooms means parents don't necessarily have to whisper in the dark once the children are asleep. A kitchen makes breakfast and snacks easier, while a living area gives everyone room to spread out.
A private pool can be another huge advantage — particularly on hot afternoons when younger children need a break from sightseeing.
